HID Amphibious Dredger Deployed to South America: Supporting Flood Control and Ecological Restoration.

HID Shipyard recently successfully delivered and commissioned a custom-built amphibious dredger for a South American client. The vessel has officially commenced operations, including river desilting, flood control dredging, and ecological restoration. Its deployment marks a significant step forward for HID’s amphibious dredging equipment in the South American market, offering a flexible and highly efficient solution for managing the region's complex waterways.

South America features dense river networks characterized by dramatic water level fluctuations between rainy and dry seasons, exposing shoals and swamps. Coupled with the accumulation of aquatic vegetation, sediment, and organic matter, these conditions often limit the use of traditional cutter suction dredgers and excavators due to their deep drafts, access difficulties, and insufficient reach. HID’s amphibious dredger utilizes a pontoon-style hull and a hydraulic drive system, allowing it to float in water while also maneuvering across shoals, swamps, and solid ground. Capable of self-launching and rapid relocation, it is ideally suited for dredging operations in rivers, wetlands, reservoirs, and port channels across South America.

At the project site, HID engineers completed equipment assembly, water-based commissioning, and operator training. Equipped with a fully rotatable excavator arm and a cutter suction pump assembly, the vessel supports the rapid interchange of attachments—such as cutter heads, grapples, weed cutters, and pile drivers—to perform diverse tasks including desilting, excavation, vegetation removal, piling, and slurry transport. During operations, the equipment primarily removes silt, aquatic vegetation, and obstacles from the riverbed, thereby clearing flow channels and enhancing flood control and drainage capabilities. Dredged slurry is transported via floating pipelines to designated sites for backfilling or resource recovery. "HID equipment operates flexibly in shallow water and muddy terrain, allows for easy relocation, and requires minimal maintenance—making it ideally suited to our local construction environment, which alternates between rainy and dry seasons," stated the project manager on-site. "Amphibious dredgers have overcome many challenges—such as inaccessibility and limited dredging depth—that traditional equipment faced. We are very confident about our continued partnership."

HID Shipyard notes a steadily growing demand in the South American market for flood control dredging, waterway maintenance, reservoir desilting, wetland restoration, and mine tailings management. HID offers customized amphibious dredgers tailored to specific operational conditions, providing comprehensive services that range from conceptual design, construction, and transport to operator training and spare parts supply. Currently, HID’s amphibious dredgers are adaptable to various water depths, discharge distances, and production capacity requirements; they can also be equipped with GPS positioning, depth sounders, flow meters, and remote monitoring systems to help clients enhance operational precision and management efficiency.

As infrastructure, flood control, and ecological restoration projects continue to advance across South America, HID Shipyard remains committed to deepening its presence in the region. By providing amphibious dredging equipment capable of handling complex operating conditions, the company aims to deliver efficient, reliable, and eco-friendly solutions to its South American clients.
